rolled + raised

Hello there! Welcome to rolled + raised, the blog totally and completely dedicated to all things doughnuts! I'd like to start off by introducing myself and explaining the purpose of this lovely blog.

First of all, my name is Camryn. I'm currently a senior in high school at a project-based learning school, therefore we have a required "senior project" that takes place over the course of our entire senior year. These projects can range from restoring an entire car to creating a business plan for a bakery or even learning how to participate in the stock market. Practically anything goes.

The project that I have chosen is simple: create, test and compile 25 doughnut recipes into this, my very own blog. I've been interested in baking for a long time. It's my absolute passion and I wouldn't want to be doing anything else. After I graduate, I plan on attending culinary school to receive a Bachelor's degree in Baking & Pastry Arts and Food Service Management.

When you choose a senior project, it should be a learning stretch. That is, you should have little to no experience with the topic that you're about to spend a year learning about. You might ask why I chose the topic of doughnuts (or even how my topic was approved) if I already have experience with baking. Let me tell you, doughnuts are a totally different realm. I had pretty much zero experience in the yeast and dough department, other than cookie doughs. During the summer before this school year, my mom asked if I could make some doughnuts. I logged onto Pinterest to see if there were any good recipes that I could use to make them, and boy were there plenty. However, all of the recipes required yeast (which we had none of) and a couple of other things I was short on: time and patience.

I've never claimed to be a patient person. It's one of my downfalls. I just cannot keep still or occupy myself with something else if I'm already in the middle of one thing. Doughnuts require patience, not too much, but a good bit. The end result is well worth it.

This project is a learning stretch for me because I'm diving into something I've never done before. I've never created my own recipes, my own techniques or even written a blog (okay, I tried one in sixth grade, it didn't go over well). I hope that throughout this year and during my project, I will grow in my knowledge of this subject and make some amazing doughnuts to share with others so that they can enjoy them as well.

Anyways, enough about me! Now that we've got the awkward introduction over with, we can move on to the doughnuts! I'll be posting periodically throughout the school year and I hope you'll follow me on my journey as I learn the ins and outs of doughnut making and everything that comes along with it.

let's make some dough!
